Summit Session for Unmasked: An Email Summit for the Profoundly Creative

Adva Shaviv in the promo image for Unmasked.
Turning My ADHD Into Magic. Sometimes, Dark Magic

“Highlighting the identity of myself and others is my idea of unmasking: not always nice, not always easy, but always true to self. It’s messy, muddled, breathless; it’s all over the place. It’s unexpected, vague, exhausting. It’s my ADHD life. It’s fragmentary and it’s loud. It is almost anything but deficient, contrary to the name: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.”

Podcast interview with ADHD Eavesdrop

The Hidden Cost of Undiagnosed ADHD in High Performers

“The whole idea for a cozy fantasy inspired by ADHD sprang of course from my own life and my own experiences but also from [the] many people with ADHD [I’ve met] along the way. It’s inspired by each and every one of them because we’re each different. […] I think our brain is a sort of fantasy in itself. When I imagine what it’s like inside, it’s very stormy, of course, but also very magical. Sometimes it’s dark magic. […] The point is to get into our mind [… and see the] kaleidoscope of perspectives that make up the ADHD brain.”

If You’re Always Late, Your “Time Personality” Might Be to Blame

“Adva Shaviv […] deals with ‘time blindness’. She struggles with being chronically late, and says a few strategies have helped her overcome her challenges. ‘I use a routines app (Routinery) to help push me from one task to the next each morning and evening,’ she says. ‘This is meant to simply keep me aware of the time moving forward.’

Interviewing Adva Shaviv: ADHD & Readership communities

“[Readers] get a glimpse inside our minds. What is going on there? Why are we so weird? How do we see the things we see? How do we feel the things we feel? And that is also connected to the fantasy […] it is a world of ADHD. A lot of it is based on ADHD in terms of metaphor but also world building. what I’m trying to do is get the readers into our unique sort of minds […]. It’s like an immersive experience of ADHD. […] I don’t write a book with ADHD […], I built the whole book around it.”

Become Interview-Ready in Two Minutes a Day

“I’m well aware that launching my debut novel — like launching any type of product — will require media appearances.

“Lots of them.

“No! — quivers a small, inner voice in my belly — I can’t do that. It’s scary, unexpected, and requires smiling when all I want to do is hide.”

Podcast Interview with Their Story Their Voice

You Are Special, Not Broken

“Growing up with something, which you feel is different, but has no name and nobody understands or recognizes it, is not growing up without a label; it’s growing up with the label of either ‘lazy’, ‘flakey’, ‘spacey’, ‘wrong’, ‘uncooperative’, which is always much worse than the label ‘ADHD’.”

Twitter Communities 101

“Adva Shaviv, who writes fantasy inspired by ADHD, created Reading with ADHD & Friends about three weeks ago to form a community around a shared interest — reading with ADHD.

“Her group’s description, ‘Joys and horrors of reading with ADHD, tips for easier reading/ listening, book recs, rants and lots of support. Other neurodivergents & friends welcome too!,’ defines what members can expect.”

Essay in The Order of Us Anthology

Discovering ADHD Magic

“Back then, little me knew she was different, but there was no name for her difference, the letters ADHD having hardly met each other yet, and so she thought she was simply damaged. There was something very wrong with her, something nameless, and she was terrified of anyone ever finding out.”

Guest Post for ADDitude

ADDED, Not ADHD

“These are our characteristics: added distractions; added imagination; added energy, inventiveness, irritability, impulsiveness, creativity… Other people are less likely to have them. That doesn’t make them better or worse; it makes them different. We are not deficient; we are ADDED!”

The Monsters Lurking Inside

“My ‘puppy’ ideas grow uncontrollably sometimes. But like with real puppies, control is not about trying to prevent them from growing. Rather, it’s about teaching them when they’re small not to jump on you, so they don’t knock you down once they’re big.”
